5 Ways To Make Your Look More Gothic

If you want to go for a gothic look, the first thing you need to do is check your attitude. If you feel goth, that will shine through regardless of what you are wearing. However, if you truly want to look goth, there are a couple of things you can do to improve your gothic look.

Step 1: Fill your wardrobe with intense colors.

Although the stereotypical goth dresses entirely in black, you do not have to wear black all the time in order to achieve a gothic look. The gothic lifestyle is one of intensity, and that should be reflected in your clothing choices. Feel free to wear black if you want to; however, if you aren't feeling black at the moment, any color will do as long as it is vivid. Avoid yellow, brown and other wishy-washy colors in favor of bold reds, purples and blues--and as many black and white outfits as you like. You can even wear pastels if you do it right. Pastels should be as cold as possible; an icy green is acceptable, while a pale green is not.

Step 2: Buy clothes that cover your entire body.

The key to the gothic look is to refuse to expose your skin to sunlight. Don't wear short sleeved shirts or shorts, and don't roll up your sleeves. Your wardrobe should consist of long sleeved shirts and long pants or skirts that go down to the floor. There should be no gap between your stockings or socks and your pants; your legs should be completely covered. Wear boots or other shoes with high tops to complete the look. Most of these items should be black or dark-colored. You should also get a black overcoat of some sort.

Step 3: Be creative.

Don't copy other gothic people's style unless it's something you personally love. The stereotypical goth wears only black and usually wears a goth band t-shirt, but that doesn't have to be you. If you choose to wear t-shirts, choose ones that express you--not just the goth lifestyle. It's also perfectly acceptable to wear dress shirts or any other type of shirt that you enjoy, as long as it matches your overall look. The hallmark of the true goth is individuality, so don't copy and don't try to look like a stereotypical goth.

Step 4: Try temporary hair dyes.

Black and silver are the most popular hair colors for goths, but you can also dye your hair non-standard colors. Dark red is also a popular goth color. Find a temporary hair dye in whatever color you'd like and try it out. These dyes only last about a week before washing out, so using them can help you experiment and see what you really like. Once you find something you love, look for a permanent hair dye that matches the color you want. Permanent hair dyes last several months and may not come out right if you don't follow the directions exactly, so if you aren't entirely confident in your ability to dye your hair, you may want to visit a professional hair salon to get it done.

Step 5: Experiment with makeup.

Goths of any gender can wear makeup. Many goths use a white foundation to help make their skin look paler. Remember that the goth look requires you to look like you can't stand sunlight, so the paler you can get your face, the better. Don't use white cream makeup; instead get white foundation and powder from a regular makeup store. After you've applied your foundation and made your skin look as pale as you want it to look, you can put on whatever other makeup you want. Many goths use dark blue eyeshadows or eyeliner. Use dark red or black lipstick to complete your look.

Plaid was associated at one time with different clans and then were a source of reference for different regions and districts. It was then during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, that tartan plaid garments became popular and could be found in catalogues. Tartan had shifted from being distinctly mens wear to part of women's fashion. In the late 1970s when the gothic or punk music culture started using the plaid fabric as a way to voice their opinions with the ruling authorities. Plaid has always been associated with authority and class since the tartan has been dated back since the 3rd century and produced in the 16th century. The popularity of tartan was greatly increased by Royals George IV, and later Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert. Plaid is one of the hottest fall fashion trends, but there is one rule with wearing plaid, and that is - don't combine more than one type of plaid for your outfit.

Corsets are all the rage again, as they peaked popularity in the 50's but are making their come back. This time, they are appearing outside the clothes than underneath. Corsets were at one time used to slim the body and mould it into a particular shape. Likewise, in some countries an elongated neck is desirable, and can be achieved over time with a neck brace which lengthen a neck to unusual proportions. The corset was used in the same fashion for the waist, and hips. In some periods of history, curvy figures were achieved with corsets that reduced the waist, and thereby exaggerating the bust and hips. However, in some periods, corsets have been worn to achieve a tubular straight-up-and-down shape, which involves minimizing the bust and hips. Though through the Elizabethan periods, corsets relieved the pressure from large dresses, such as the crinoline and bustle. A chemise undergarment was worn to protect outer clothes from the corset and to smooth the lines of the corset. Original corsets were not worn next to the skin, because of the difficulties of laundering silk gowns, as well as they had steel boning and metal eyelets which would rust. Chemise tops are popular again, and being worn as they were in the old days. Today corset wedding gowns are all the rage, as smart brides are figuring out they give the illusion of the perfect figure and still have the cookies at the end of the night.

Many different corset styles come to life on these pages. There are detailed close-up pages to perhaps entice the ambitious tailor or seamstress into attempting to make his/her own corset someday. There are some great costume ideas here. Most of the models look like they are really enjoying themselves. Some of the quotes at the end of the book are very entertaining, some are silly, and all of them illustrate the many reasons why people enjoy dressing up. Finding a hair style that fits your personality and looks great with your facial shape can be a challenge for everyone. Rod Stewart's hairstyle still looks as hot as it was when he was in his 20's because it just works on him. Gothic hairstyles are not neccessarly all black or all bright colors as their are many variations that fall into the "gothic" catergory. Dark hazel brown or rich blonde work perfectly in creating the gothic look just as much as punk does. One way of trying out a hairstyle and new color is to purchase a wig and experiment without cutting your own hair. Today you can find quality wigs that don't look fake that are affordable which allows you to try the edgy looks out without constant color changes or by cutting off your hair only to wait several months for a fresh start. From there you can decide what works for you, and find a hairdresser that can duplicate the look without going wrong.

From experience, I have changed my hair color in the last 2 years from black to blonde, to red, to brown and back to blonde. I never thought that my hair would fall out from coloring it as like others I thought I could do what ever I wanted so long as I deep conditioned it. Nothing was more frightening than combing out handfulls of hair everyday. Now, with deep conditioning treatments every week, along with cutting off a fair bit of length my hair is much healthier and I am not experiencing the loss. I have found that dying my hair red looked quite dynamite, as red heads are one of the hottest trends out there, but the color was very difficult to maintain. The color would fade quicker than any other color I have tried, leaving it looking dull and artifically colored. With red, it also hard to find a red that looks natural. If you do decide to go the red route, consider adding some low lights instead of going completely red at first.

Dark rich colors are a classic look in gothic hairstyles, and dark hair is one route men cannot go wrong in. Adam Lambert is the perfect example of a goth look done right!

Dark hair can really be dramatic on women as they have the benefit of adding eye make up. The challenge with dark hair, and black hair in particular is it does make most people look quite pale in color, as the color often washes out all the color out of your skin. With women, the added makeup can really offset the dark color, by adding smoky eyes and glossy lips. If your hair is quite processed, the darker color compared to the lighter blonde looks can magnify the dryness if your hair, leading you to depend on shine products to give that glossy look. Packages of die often give the illusion that your hair will be glossy, but that is not always the case. One option in getting around this look is by adding some depth to your hair through low lights. This will give you the darker color you are after while also looking natural without it looking dyed.

If you are willing to be a bit more wild, consider thicker and wider lowlights which adds a bit of a youthful exotic look. If you have the confidence, purple, red and blue work well with dark hair and are availiable in temporary wash out dies, that will give you the fun crazy styles until you wash your hair next.

Westwood is known to be one of Britain’s most influential designers, whom revolutionized the punk fashion culture- which as never gone out of fashion. Her outrageous spiked dog collars and outrageous make-up and hair has increased the popularity of gothic and punk styles. Westwood has been been known for her outrageous looks which have always centered around the inspiration of pirates, tartans, courtesans, victoriana, and bondage. She is continually adding a new shocking elements to her punk looks with the use of pattern and color, but still applies the use of 17th and 18th century cloth cutting principles giving her the advantage as she interprets old styles into new shocking collections. American Idol Icon Adam Lambert Loves Gothic Clothing, Fashion And Style

Even though he didn't win American Idol in May of 2009, he finished as the runner-up and has been discovered as one of the best new voices on the music scene. Adam Lambert is bringing the glamour back to rock. So, why is he so different? Lambert has a voice that can belt out the notes AND seamlessly transition from one pitch to another that flows like silk. Lambert has trained his voice well, and has had tons of practice from performing since childhood. He has appeared in musicals, cabaret as well as rock shows. Not only that, but Adam Lambert is a huge fan of gothic clothing, fashion and style.

After high school, he moved to Orange County California to attend college. After only 5 weeks, he had a change of heart, and decided to go after his real dream of performing.

By 2004, Lambert was making a name for himself through small parts around the Los Angeles area. He played a small role in The Ten Commandments at the Kodak Theatre alongside film actor Val Kilmer. He also began performing at The Zodiac Show. During his time with Zodiac, Lambert wowed fellow performers with his vocal range where he began writing his own music. His "Crawl Through Fire," was written in collaboration with Madonna's guitarist Monte Pittman. His incredible vocal range will put him in a league with some of the best singers of the rock era.

Von Teese has appeared in Vanity Fair, Vogue, Elle, and international issues of nearly every fashion magazine. Von Teese states that she never uses a stylist. "The one time I hired a stylist, they picked up a pair of my 1940s shoes and said, "These would look really cute with jeans." I immediately said, 'You’re out of here.'" She does her own make-up, and dyes her naturally blonde hair black at home.
