
Plaid was associated at one time with different clans and then were a source of reference for different regions and districts. It was then during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, that tartan plaid garments became popular and could be found in catalogues. Tartan had shifted from being distinctly mens wear to part of women's fashion. In the late 1970s when the gothic or punk music culture started using the plaid fabric as a way to voice their opinions with the ruling authorities. Plaid has always been associated with authority and class since the tartan has been dated back since the 3rd century and produced in the 16th century. The popularity of tartan was greatly increased by Royals George IV, and later Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert.
