Corsets are all the rage again, as they peaked popularity in the 50's but are making their come back. This time, they are appearing outside the clothes than underneath. Corsets were at one time used to slim the body and mould it into a particular shape. Likewise, in some countries an elongated neck is desirable, and can be achieved over time with a neck brace which lengthen a neck to unusual proportions. The corset was used in the same fashion for the waist, and hips. In some periods of history, curvy figures were achieved with corsets that reduced the waist, and thereby exaggerating the bust and hips. However, in some periods, corsets have been worn to achieve a tubular straight-up-and-down shape, which involves minimizing the bust and hips. Though through the Elizabethan periods, corsets relieved the pressure from large dresses, such as the crinoline and bustle. A chemise undergarment was worn to protect outer clothes from the corset and to smooth the lines of the corset. Original corsets were not worn next to the skin, because of the difficulties of laundering silk gowns, as well as they had steel boning and metal eyelets which would rust. Chemise tops are popular again, and being worn as they were in the old days. Today corset wedding gowns are all the rage, as smart brides are figuring out they give the illusion of the perfect figure and still have the cookies at the end of the night.

"This (Fedish Fashion)book is a visual feast! I love the models; the editors picked a variety of models in many different shapes, sizes, genders, and ages. Many different corset styles come to life on these pages. There are detailed close-up pages to perhaps entice the ambitious tailor or seamstress into attempting to make his/her own corset someday. There are some great costume ideas here. Most of the models look like they are really enjoying themselves. Some of the quotes at the end of the book are very entertaining, some are silly, and all of them illustrate the many reasons why people enjoy dressing up. This is a gorgeous book, extremely reasonably priced, and a great addition to any costumer's or corsetry afficiando's library!- By E. Haynes
